A Road Trip in the Scottish Highlands

We fell in love with Scotland on our first visit in late-Spring of 2019. That trip combined train travel around the country with a barge trip along the Caledonian Canal in the Highlands. Not only was the scenery gorgeous but we found the Scottish people to be very friendly and helpful. Edinburgh and Glasgow are great cities to explore with many museums, parks, attractions, and dining options. Yes, we tried Haggis (too peppery for me) and Cullen Skink (a yummy chowder made with smoked haddock.) But my favorite by far was Mac and Cheese. You just have to love a country with such a classic as one of its national dishes!

When our friends here in Portugal suggested a road trip around Scotland, we loved the idea and started making plans. Since they had lived on the Island of Islay for many years, we were excited to have them give us a personal tour around the Highlands. During our trip we spent time in Inveraray, Islay, Fort William, Invergarry, Fort Augustus, and South Queensferry.  We met their friends, toured a distillery, rode the Jacobite Steam Train, visited a castle, rode the ferry, ate terrific food, and drank fine whisky. It was an amazing adventure! Here are some of the many photos I took during our travels. Enjoy!
